It's Neither Here Nor There

A blog about two friends far apart yet close at heart.

Landscaping, Alaska Style

July10

Dear Carolyn,

I really really want the kids to get to see Toy Story 3. Truthfully, I am the one who really, really wants to see it. I just can’t remember Toy Story 2 so I would need to rent that first because I’m quirky like that. There’s a brand new IMAX theatre in Anchorage that I hear is excellent. Some friends saw it in 3d but not on the IMAX screen. They said it was so cool! I say if we see it we go there.

Which brings me to the every weekend dilemma. If we do something fun, it seems to take the whole stinking weekend and we don’t get our “chores” done. Since moving into the new house, we’ve had plenty of chores to do. We learned early on that houses in Alaska don’t come with grass. And when someone says “landscaped lawn” they simply mean there is grass. Where we come from, landscaping eludes to images of neat shrubbery and flowers and those little pieces of bark in really cool beds. Not so here. It was culture shock when we first moved. So right now, at our new home, we have dirt and rocks. And let me tell you, the only nice thing about that is the absence of the added chore of mowing. It is not good for kids and dogs. The floors are constantly needing swept even though we take our shoes off just inside the door and the kids just get filthy at a whole new level. We have moved (by hand) about 50 wheelbarrows of rock (of varying sizes)  from the back yard to the side of our driveway and need to finish that up.

Mike and I are still debating how much topsoil to buy. Yes, we have to buy dirt here and it ain’t “dirt cheap” as the old saying goes. Then we’ll be able to seed. And the question now becomes: “Will there be enough time to grow some grass before the white stuff starts falling?” I’ve gotta get a move on and get out there. Suddenly I don’t want to see Toy Story. I’ve got more pressing things to do.

Agghh, it’s almost 10 am and we’re just now eating breakfast, but that’s neither here nor there.

off to work,

Kristy
